ACSR Steel Reinforced Aluminum Conductors

ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) is a widely used overhead power transmission conductor composed of a central steel core surrounded by one or more layers of aluminum strands. It combines the high tensile strength of steel with the excellent conductivity and lightweight properties of aluminum, making it ideal for long-span power lines.

Key Features of ACSR:

  1. Construction:

    • Steel Core: Provides mechanical strength and resistance to sagging under heavy loads or high temperatures.

    • Aluminum Outer Strands: Conduct electricity efficiently while being lightweight and corrosion-resistant.

  2. Advantages:

    • High Tensile Strength: Suitable for long spans (e.g., river crossings, mountainous areas).

    • Cost-Effective: Cheaper than all-aluminum or copper conductors.

    • Thermal Stability: Steel core reduces sag at high temperatures.

Corrosion Resistance: Aluminum forms a protective oxide layer.

  • Disadvantages:

    • Higher Reactance: Due to steel's magnetic properties, affecting power transfer efficiency.

    • Susceptibility to Corrosion: In coastal or polluted areas, galvanized or aluminum-coated steel cores may be used.

  • Applications:

    • Overhead power transmission & distribution lines.

    • Railway electrification.

    • Telecommunication towers (as guy wires).
