Metal oxide Zinc High Voltage Surge Arrester for Overhead Line

Zinc Oxide Surge Arresters represent a significant advancement in lightning protection technology. Their superior performance, reliability, and low maintenance requirements make them the preferred choice for modern electrical systems. By leveraging the non-linear volt-ampere characteristics of zinc oxide, these arresters provide effective and efficient protection against overvoltages, ensuring the safety and reliability of power networks and connected equipment.

1. Ratings:0.22~500KV (porcelain),0.22~220KV(composite) 


Working Conditions

The surge arrester is designed for reliable operation under the following environmental and electrical conditions:

  1. Ambient Air Temperature: –40°C to +40°C, suitable for extreme cold and hot climates.

  2. Altitude: ≤ 2000 meters above sea level (higher altitude applications available upon request).

  3. System Frequency: 48 Hz to 62 Hz, covering both 50 Hz and 60 Hz power systems worldwide.

  4. Continuous Operating Voltage (Uc): The applied power frequency voltage between terminals must not exceed the continuous operating voltage rating of the surge arrester, ensuring no thermal runaway or premature aging.

  5. Seismic Condition: Earthquake intensity less than 8 degrees (MSK scale), ensuring structural integrity during seismic events.

  6. Maximum Wind Speed: 35 m/s, suitable for outdoor installations in high-wind regions, including coastal and open areas.

These working conditions ensure that the surge arrester performs reliably in harsh environments such as deserts, high-altitude regions, coastal zones, and industrial areas.


Features

1. Superior Protection Performance

    • Lightning strikes (direct and indirect)

    • Temporary overvoltages (TOV)

    • Transient overvoltages caused by fault clearing or capacitor bank switching

2. Lightweight and Compact Design

  • Zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arresters are significantly smaller and lighter than traditional silicon carbide (SiC) or gapped arresters.

  • Compact size allows for:

    • Easier installation in confined spaces (e.g., substations, pole-mounted systems)

    • Reduced structural load on towers and supports

    • Simplified handling and storage

  • Lower weight also reduces shipping costs and installation labor.

3. Excellent Pollution Resistance

  • Designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, including:

    • Heavy industrial pollution (e.g., cement plants, steel mills)

    • Coastal salt spray and high humidity

    • Dust, sand, and chemical contaminants

  • Specially formulated silicone rubber or polymeric housing provides:

    • High tracking and erosion resistance

    • Superior hydrophobicity (water repellency)

    • Long-term performance in pollution class III and IV environments (IEC 60815)

  • Suitable for pollution-prone areas such as deserts, coastal regions, and heavy industrial zones.

4. Stable Long-Term Performance

  • Offers consistent protection over a wide range of operating temperatures and system conditions.

  • Minimal electrical and mechanical degradation over time, thanks to:

    • High-quality ZnO varistor blocks

    • Hermetically sealed internal structure (for porcelain housings)

    • Advanced polymeric housing materials that resist UV and aging

  • Long service life reduces replacement frequency and lifecycle cost.

5. No Spark Gaps – Maintenance-Free Operation

  • Unlike traditional gapped arresters, ZnO surge arresters operate without spark gaps.

  • Eliminates the risk of:

    • Spark gap misalignment or contamination

    • Gap erosion or failure over time

    • Increased protective voltage levels due to gap degradation

  • Results in lower maintenance requirements and higher reliability over the entire service life.

6. Optional Features (Available Upon Request)

  • Discharge counter for monitoring surge events

  • Leakage current meter for online condition assessment

  • Insulated base for special mounting requirements

  • Different housing materials: porcelain, silicone rubber, or cycloaliphatic epoxy
