Select the cable according to the system voltage and grounding method. U₀ is the rated power-frequency voltage between conductor and screen/armour; U is the rated voltage between conductors. The maximum system voltage Um must not exceed the cable’s specified value.
| System Nominal Voltage | Cable Rated Voltage U₀/U | Maximum System Voltage Um |
|---|---|---|
| 6 kV | 3.6/6 kV | 7.2 kV |
| 10 kV | 6/10 kV | 12 kV |
| 15 kV | 8.7/15 kV | 17.5 kV |
| 20 kV | 12/20 kV | 24 kV |
| 30 kV | 18/30 kV | 36 kV |
| 35 kV | 26/35 kV | 42 kV |
For ungrounded or resonant-grounded systems, select a higher U₀ rating. For effectively grounded systems, the standard U₀/U rating is usually sufficient.
Copper: Higher conductivity, better short-circuit performance, suitable for critical circuits and limited installation space.
Aluminium: Lower weight and cost, suitable for long routes where weight and budget are priorities.
Cross-section: Determine by load current, short-circuit current, voltage drop, ambient temperature, soil thermal resistivity, and grouping factor. Typical three-core medium voltage range: 25–400 mm².
XLPE insulation allows a continuous conductor temperature of 90°C and a short-circuit temperature of 250°C for up to 5 seconds. Insulation thickness is specified by IEC 60502-2 according to voltage rating.
Choose galvanised steel wire armour for:
Direct burial without additional conduit
Vertical shafts and steep routes requiring tensile strength
Areas with ground movement, heavy traffic, or rodent risk
Bridge or tunnel spans where mechanical damage is possible
For highly corrosive environments, specify an additional anti-corrosion layer or a PE oversheath.
PVC: General purpose, flame-retardant, cost-effective.
PE: Better moisture resistance, preferred for direct burial and wet locations.
LSZH: Low smoke and halogen-free, for tunnels, indoor substations, and public infrastructure.
Direct burial: Use SWA with PE or PVC oversheath; consider soil thermal resistivity and burial depth.
Ducts and trenches: SWA provides extra protection during pulling and against subsequent damage.
Vertical shafts: Steel wire armour supports cable weight; calculate pulling tension and support spacing.
Tunnels and indoor routes: LSZH oversheath may be required for fire safety.
Bridge or long spans: Verify pulling tension, support spacing, and bending radius.
Minimum bending radius is typically 12–15 times the cable outer diameter for static installation and 20 times during pulling. Select drum length according to route length, number of joints, transport limits, and installation method.
Specify the applicable standard: IEC 60502-2, GB/T 12706.2, BS 6622, VDE 0276-620, or project-specific requirements.
